Neurological morbidity of monochorionic twins

چکیده
Monochorionic twins (MC) are at increased risk for morbidity. The unique placenta with vascular anastomoses may create imbalance with either acute or chronic hypotension or cardiac insufficiency that will eventually affect the fetal brain. It appears that these characteristics of the MC placenta add to the already higher frequency of brain anomalies observed

Optimum timing for planned delivery of uncomplicated monochorionic and dichorionic twin pregnancies.
OBJECTIVE To determine the optimum timing for planned delivery of uncomplicated monochorionic and dichorionic twin pregnancies. METHODS Unselected twin pregnancies were recruited for this prospective cohort study (N=1,028), which was conducted in eight tertiary referral perinatal centers in Ireland. Perinatal mortality and a composite measure of perinatal morbidity (respiratory distress, necr...
متن کاملRe-Thinking Elective Single Embryo Transfer: Increased Risk of Monochorionic Twinning - A Systematic Review.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Multiple pregnancies have tripled in the United States over the past 3 decades. Attributed to increasing maternal age at delivery but more so assisted reproductive technological advances, an effort has been made to decrease twinning through elective single embryo transfer. We sought to review and evaluate risks of monochorionic twinning as a predictable consequence of incr...

The incidence of multiple pregnancy has increased by 1.7 times from 1980-1994. Twenty-five percent of all twins are monochorionic diamnionic. The perinatal mortality of monochorionic twins is five times greater than that found in dichorionic twins and the morbidity is eight times greater. The increase in morbidity is due to prematurity, cerebral lesions and congenital malformations. One of the ...
متن کاملContribution of Multiple Pregnancies to Perinatal Mortality and Morbidity
Multiple pregnancies have increased from 9 per 1000 pregnancies in the 1970s to 14 per 1000 pregnancies. Multiple births account for 10% of perinatal deaths (8% of fetal deaths and 14% of neonatal deaths). Compared to singletons births, the perinatal mortality rate is four times higher in twins, and nine times higher in multiple births of a higher order. The cerebral palsy rate among survivors ...
متن کاملCardiac morbidity in monochorionic twins
Twin pregnancies are at increased risk of complications and adverse outcome compared to singletons. A significant contribution to higher morbidity and mortality seen in monochorionic twins is made by cardiac complications. Abnormal cardiac development in monochorionic pregnancies can be divided into primary structural cardiac lesions (structural cardiac anomalies unrelated to the existence of T...
